RTE Prime Time, Tuesday 7 May 2013: Panel discuss proposal’s for world’s largest salmon farm in Galway Bay
A debate was held between Donal Maguire, Chief Executive of BIM, and Alan Molloy, No Salmon Farms At Sea, on Prime Time. A number of interested parties, both for and against the proposal for the world’s largest salmon farm were included in the audience.
During the debate Donal Maguire claimed the research by David Jackson of the Marine Institute was ‘definitive’, dismissing numerous other global studies whose results have contradicted those found by Jackson. Donal Maguire also stated there was no need for an independent review of the proposal to develop the world’s largest salmon farm in Galway Bay, as the results would be the same as those found by BIM who are proposing the development and produced the environmental impact statement. Opposition groups strongly dispute this claim stating the EIS is one sided as it is produced by the developer and ignores the cohort of research on sea lice and other impacts.
Further discussion revolved around potential jobs the giant salmon farm would create, though again figures being presented are disputed by opposition whose calculations are based on employment in other salmon farming nations.
