Big Ransom for Escapee Salmon
Irish Examiner, Farm Antics, 21 Nov 2013
Norwegian fish farming giant Marine Harvest is offering a €60 reward for recaptured salmon after a violent storm saw thousands of its fish escape last weekend.
West Norway was shipped by strong winds, damaging the huge submerged cage in which 127,000 of the fish are kept by the world’s largest salmon producer. Marine Harvest has set nets to catch the 2kg swim-aways; it is also offering 500 kroner (€60) for each fugitive returned.
The escapees are damaging to the marine ecosystem as the farmed salmon weaken the genetic makeup of their wild cousins – if they reproduce with them. Industry professionals have successfully tackled the problem in recent years, vastly reducing the number of escapees.
Figures from 2012 shoed that 38,000 salmon escaped, ten times fewer than in 2011, versus a peak in 2006 of 921,000 stated the Norwegian Fisheries Board.
